&lt;div&gt;I&#039;m a (mostly) happy user of a Linux-only (Gentoo) IBM Thinkpad T43, and of a desktop machine with a R600-based card.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Since using ATI&#039;s binary drivers caused unpleasant surprises at every kernel update, I switched to the radeon and radeonhd drivers, and where possible to using nvidia graphics cards (which are in my experience way less problematic).&lt;br /&gt;
